The COMIS Hotel and Golf Resort is a 4**** hotel located just off the A5 road that runs from Ronaldsway airport to Douglas and is about 3 miles from Douglas. If arriving at the airport or ferry port there is a bus stop located on the A5 road just a few minutes walk from the hotel. The hotel does not look much from the outside but I was told it is probably the best on the island. There was level access to the reception desk but no lowered section to easily sign in from a wheelchair, I had to go to a table. Everywhere I went in the hotel was on the ground floor.

Large comfortable bed

This was not a planned stay, my room was organised by Flybe after my flight home was cancelled and so I was in an ‘accessible’ room rather than a ‘fully accessible’ room as it was the only accessible hotel with rooms available that night which Flybe/Menzies could find. The room had a large comfortable bed with plenty of pillows and there was lots of space beneath it if you need to bring your hoist.

The bedroom facilities

There was plenty of room to manoeuvre a wheelchair around the room and in the room was a wardrobe, chest of drawers, flat screen tv on the wall and a desk with tea and coffee making facilities on it. Also hidden away in the wardrobe was a mini fridge. I believe the ‘fully accessible’ bedrooms, of which there are two, are similar with only the bathroom being different, but I didn’t see for myself so can’t be 100% sure.

The bathroom facilities

The bathroom was not so accessible, there was no room to get a wheelchair to either side of the toilet to transfer, the shower is not roll in and the bath tub has no handrails. The washbasin was like a bowl on a shelf and not ideally situated to use from a wheelchair. That being said, I managed alright in the bathroom and probably would for a longer stay but many wheelchair users wouldn’t.

Manx kippers for breakfast

Breakfast was taken in the Snaefell restaurant and bar which had floor to ceiling windows around two sides with a panoramic view over the countryside including Snaefell, the Isle of Man’s only mountain. Cooked breakfast or continental breakfast items were available from the buffet and kippers could be ordered freshly cooked. I opted for the kippers and had some yoghurt and a pot of tea whilst waiting for them to be cooked.

The cost of a room at the COMIS Hotel and Golf Resort is about £124 (approx. US$160) a night, and for an additional £6 (US$10) it included a round of golf.
